In this post, we will delve deeper into the concepts of differential geometry, mainly focusing on the notion of riemann tensor, ricci tensor, and ricci scalar.

I. The Riemann Tensor

A. Definition

We start with a \(d\)-dimensional manifold \(M\) endowed with a (pseudo-)Riemannian metric \(g_{\mu\nu}\). The connection compatible with the metric is the Levi-Civita connection \(\nabla\). The Riemann curvature tensor (often called simply the Riemann tensor) \(R^\rho_{\ \sigma\mu\nu}\) is defined by the commutator of covariant derivatives acting on a vector field \(V^\rho\):

In index notation, another common way to write this definition is:

Notational Conventions

B. Derivation via Parallel Transport Around a Closed Loop

1. Parallel Transport

Consider a vector field \(V^\rho\) on a manifold. Parallel transport of \(V^\rho\) along a curve \(\gamma(\tau)\) is defined by the condition that the covariant derivative of \(V^\rho\) along the tangent direction of the curve vanishes. Mathematically, this is expressed as:

This equation ensures that the vector \(V^\rho\) is carried along \(\gamma\) in such a way that it remains “as constant as possible” with respect to the manifold’s geometry.

2. Loop Transport and Curvature

To explore the concept of curvature, consider two infinitesimally close curves \(\gamma_1\) and \(\gamma_2\) that together form a small closed loop \(\partial\Sigma\). Parallel transport \(V^\rho\) around this loop. In a flat manifold, the vector would return to its initial value after completing the loop. However, in a curved manifold, the final vector generally differs from its initial value by a small amount proportional to the area of the loop.

3. Derivation of the Riemann Tensor from Parallel Transport

To derive the relationship between parallel transport around a loop and the Riemann tensor, consider a small rectangular loop in the \(x^\mu\)-\(x^\nu\) plane with side lengths \(\delta a\) and \(\delta b\). The vector \(V^\rho\) is transported along four segments:

    Another Approach Using the Gauss-Bonnet Theorem

1. Volume Distortion and the Ricci Tensor

In curved space, the relationship between the Ricci tensor and volume distortion can be understood by examining how the volume of a small region deviates from its flat-space counterpart. Using Riemann normal coordinates (RNC) centered at a point \(P\), the metric tensor \(g_{\mu\nu}\) can be expanded around \(P\) as:

2. Integrating the Distortion & the Ricci Scalar

The volume \(V\) of a geodesic ball of radius \(\epsilon\) (where \(\|\mathbf{X}\| = \epsilon\)) is given by:

\[ V = \int_{B(\epsilon)} \sqrt{\det g}\, d^dx \approx \int_{B(\epsilon)} \left(1 - \frac{1}{6}R_{kl}x^k x^l\right) d^dx \]

The flat volume \(V_{\text{flat}} = \omega_d \epsilon^d\), where \(\omega_d\) is the volume of the unit \(d\)-ball.

Using spherical symmetry, the integral \(\int_{B(\epsilon)} x^k x^l d^dx\) evaluates to:

Contracting with the Ricci tensor:
